'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

Is GERD from too much acid or not enough?

Is GERD from too much acid or not enough. Lots of mixed information on the internet.

For me, it's too much stomach acid

Karen Salter
I have actually puked up nothing but stomach acid/bile lots of times...this is the reason I take PPIs....they affect stomach acid production

Bethany Dixon
The website I was referred to about having too little stomach acid was not based on empirical research, so I'm tempted to say that it's too much simply based on that. However, I'm sure the actual picture is more complicated.

Deb Christian Copas
Gerd is when acid goes up into the esophagus and throat. gastritis is when the issues stay in tummy...at least that's what I read

Bethany Dixon
And the typical cause of the acid in the esophagus is the sphincter at the top of your stomach being too relaxed.

Patricia O'Keeffe
It is the washing of the esophagus lining by the acid and bile needed for digestive process in the stomach and duodenum. This is due to the valve sphincter at the opening of the stomach where the esophagus contents enterthe stomach, not closing properly and being slack so that stomach contents can move upwards through that

Patricia O'Keeffe
oose valve. Fix the loose valve and no more reflux.

Patricia O'Keeffe
But weaken acid for over 40 yr olds means digestion is not as efficient for uptaking nutrients in the duodenum. But it is the loose valve that does not shut properly that causes reflux up to the esophagus or into stomach from the lower valve to the small intestine Which allows too much bile acid to go into stomach. Fix valves if you can.

Kim Hale-Yim
How does one fix the valve?

Patricia O'Keeffe
Only way I know is fundiplication operation. the refluxing of stomach contents with chronic GERD is due to the mechanical problem of loose sphincter. The weak acid can be remedied by taking digestive enzymes, Betaine Hydrochloride with protein meals and pancreatic enzymes If needed. Need to get the acid balance right. Bragg's apple cider vinegar is good for most people as a aid in digestion.

Kim Hale-Yim
I'm taking apple cider vinegar but not sure if it's making it worse

Patricia O'Keeffe
Sometimes it works to get rid of heartburn for me.. sometimes not.

I say too little, its very rare that people have too much. Most of the things like eating terrible cause lower acid. Now the real question is what is behind the cause of your low acid. Im inclined to believe it has to do with yeast/fungal overgrowth.

Patricia O'Keeffe
Low gstric acid happens as we age, most likely over 40 yrs of age. Betaine hydrochloride by company (GNLD) kept me able to keep a full time job in hospital pharmacy, from age 54. But after that due to marital stressand bipolar depression, and diagnosis of Barrett's and all the troubles from diverticular diseSe.. I now have to take PPI lansoprazole.. and modify diet.

Owen Fear
Are you still working at the hospital
