'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

Can having too little stomach acid cause the same symptoms?

Can having too little stomach acid cause the same symptoms? I was on protonix for a week and a half and my symptoms seemed to get worse, it's usually in the morning AFTER I get up out of bed. Lying down I'm fine. The moment I get up I'll get chest pressure, shortness of breath and my heart rate will shoot up to 130-140's. Anyone else? It goes down throughout the day but it will occur if I eat something that triggers it or do an exercise that uses my stomach area. It ALWAYS happens every morning though.

This JUST happened to me!!!! I woke up with chest pressure after sleeping in and when I stood up my heart started pounding like crazy 😢😢😢😭😢

Did you eat something before you went to bed last night?

Emily Cook
Eric Ludwig i had two bites of bread but nothing really other than that

I'm still trying to figure out what makes some mornings worse than others lol. I had half of a wrap last night before I went to bed (I know I shouldn't lol) but these palpitations scare the crap out of me. its been well over a month of this

I'm convinced that something similar happened to me. I started taking PPI because I was extremely burpy, but things went downhill from there rather than getting better. I wasn't digesting anything. Some odd side effects, too.

Related post: For those who exercise, what can you do that does not irritate and cause reflux?

Eric Ludwig
I stopped taking Protonix today (its only been a week and a half) I was actually doing better until I started this!

Holly Anderson
Eric Ludwig Yep. It happened for me pretty quickly, too. My right side pain started getting worse nearly immediately instead of better. Everything just slowed down. Turned out later that they found my small hernia -- which is likely the cause of my burpy issue. I don't have heartburn. But the doctors wanted me to keep taking PPI even though it made things worse for me! I've stopped, and I feel better. But I'm still so confused.

(PS this all started after a coughing fit I had. After about a week of coughing I developed palpitations and shortness of breath)

The vargus nerve can cause many things when it gets irritated. Reflux is the main irritant and the digestive track can cause many symptoms

Eric Ludwig
the antacid my doctor put me on actually made me feel worse, I'm wondering if I have low stomach acid instead. I'm not sure if that would also affect the
Tom Owen Low acid would create issues in the digestive track for sure and that could trigger symptoms.

Eric Ludwig When I was coughing for a week I was extremely stressed (I have panic disorder) and I'm thinking maybe that caused low stomach acid.. I started to feel better ISH, then my doctor put me on Protonix and its gotten worse again lol. Thank you!
