'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

I have been struggling with Acid Reflux/GERD for about 7-8 years.

Hello! I just joined the group today and wanted to introduce myself. I am 41 years old and have lived my whole life in Maryland. I have been struggling with Acid Reflux/GERD for about 7-8 years. I've had two really bad episodes where I was convinced I was having a heart attack. My exercise stress tests proved it wasn't heart related (thank God!). My symptoms vary from chest pain/burn, nausea, stomach pain/burn, feeling of my throat being squeezed, heart pounding, back pain, sinus pressure, headaches and several other various issues. I also have gastritis, a hiatal hernia and anxiety. I take a PPI twice daily and still have to use over the counter meds and Tums on occasion. I'm hoping to learn from everyone on how to better manage my symptoms and to share recipes that are GERD friendly. I look forward to interacting with everyone!

Stefanie Chester
Thanks for the suggestion, do you recommend a specific brand?

Welcome! I have no doubt anxiety plays a huge roll in our reflux problems, making us feel we are dying. I was diagnosed after several ER visits. If you don't keep a food journal, start that now. We all have different symptoms and reactions, so writing down everything you eat, and how it effected you, will help immensely!

Stefanie Chester
Thanks! I've always wanted to keep a food journal, I need to push myself to remember. Anxiety absolutely plays a huge roll in the problem, plus stress seems to affect me too.

How was the hernia repaired?

Stefanie Chester
No repair, it's still there.

Richardean Harris
I had a tear in my diaphragm. They repaired with a psiomesh. Research very well before u consent. Most mesh being recalled. Will make esophagus symptoms a WHOLE lot worse.

Hi, what does your sinus pressure feel like. I have this and a lot of the symptoms there and am currently having lots of heart tests. I've been diagnosed with ibs before but with no formal tests for it. Now my doctors put everything down to anxiety

Stefanie Chester
Hi Tammy, I have pressure behind my nose, cheeks and eyes mostly. I'm fairly certain I also have IBS but it hasn't been proven through tests. My doctor feels that most of my issues are because of stress and anxiety. I lost my father 5 years ago from a heart attack and I'm always worried that the same will happen to me. I'm trying to manage through, prayer and support to avoid taking any medications for anxiety.

Tammy Umm Hamza
Same here, I lost my husband 4yrs ago and my mum nearly 2yrs ago to heart disease so these symptoms really scare me. That's exactly where I get my pressure it feels like it's at the back of my throats to. I'm really trying to avoid meds and control it myself but all these issues don't help do they

Stefanie Chester
Sounds like we are very similar. I too get a feeling in my throat like it's being squeezed. You're right, it's hard to control it yourself with all the issues combined.
