'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

I read somewhere that deep breathing especially holding your breath in belly helps strenghten LES and abdominal muscles

Dear friends I read somewhere that deep breathing especially holding your breath in belly helps strenghten LES and abdominal muscles. Here is the link to an article about an Austrian study that showed breathing exercises helped GERD.

Sh Never heard this

It’s quite a small study but the results were positive.
This diaphragmatic breathing is good for anxiety and relaxation.
I find it helpful after a big meal too!

My gastroenterologist Just told me he might refer me to a physical therapist to learn how to breathe right. Said he could tell by my belching pattern that there’s something uncoordinated with my diaphragm /breathing/ hiatal hernia. I’d never heard of this and will have to learn more. My muscles are weakened by Connective Tissue Disease .

He called the breathing disorder “abdomino-phrenic dyssynergia”

Susan Payne what problem is hh causing u? And are h operating

Susan Payne
acid heartburn, belching, nausea, and no they aren't operating because its not that big and also I have a compromised immune system so they wouldn't want to do surgery unless absolutely necessary. like the stomach half out of place etc. but its not that big. Though I am going to get a barium swallow soon to see if it has gotten bigger. I probably got the HH from a time period when I was sick and vomiting hard several times a week for months.

Susan Payne so what tests u done ?

Susan Payne
Already did endoscopy and a motility test Had colonoscopy as well a couple years ago. The endoscopy found the HH. Motility test showed nothing abnormal about stomach emptying rate. SIBO test, H Pilori (ulcer) and parasites/ bacteria were all negative. Colonoscopy showed diverticulitis and polyps which have been treated. Stool test showed very low on benefitical bacteria needed by lower bowel but that only explains the constipation I have and I have started probiotics and made diet changes. All my symptoms can be explained by the HH and the autoimmune disorder I have and/or the drugs that I take for the autoimmune disorder.
