'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

My problem with acid reflux recently started after having some elective surgery about six weeks ago

Hello and thank you for accepting me to your group. My problem with acid reflux recently started after having some elective surgery about six weeks ago. I began having heart palpitations which landed me in the emergency room a few weeks ago. I took a Tums for the first time a couple weeks ago and it seemed to help but I didn't really make the connection at the time. I belong to another group on Facebook for heart palpitations. One of the girls told me that heart palpitations can be the result of acid reflux. I began to notice that my stomach was feeling funky. I have given up all caffeine and chocolate and tried to change my diet. I do have an appointment with a cardiologist next week to be on the safe side of the ER doctor did not think there was anything seriously wrong as he did every test conceivable. I took two Tums today and did not experience any noticeable palpitations and my stomach is feeling better. I have been eating some sauerkraut which is homemade and recommended for digestive issues. I also bought some caffeine free ginger tea which I will start drinking tomorrow. I really would like to remain drug-free. Sorry for the long introduction... My blood pressure is 100/60 my pulse rate is in the 60s I generally exercise almost daily. My way is normal. I'm looking forward to getting some ideas and listening to other peoples experiences. Thanks again. Oh I should mention that I have always suffered from extreme anxiety and have been diagnosed with GAD. I do take Klonopin for that which I was in the process of weaning myself off of 2 mg per day. The ER doctor did not like that idea and told me to keep taking it I will be seeing my general practitioner later this month as well.

Anxiet can cause heart palpitations. Maybe reducing your klonopin is causing? Do any foods seem to trigger the reaction?

Maria Michelle
no foods - but have never had acid reflux until right before this began. I didn't even recognize what it was. I reduced the Klonopin months ago - but maybe had an effect. I gave up coffee when I noticed the palps but was only drinking about one cup a day. Today drank ginger tea and it seemed to help with the acid. I also had some home made sauerkraut for dinner I feel no heart palps or reflux right now...I did give up B12 and D3 as well as fish oil a few days ago. They never had an effect on me before and I've taken them for ~ 6 months. I did give them up prior to surgery and started again about two weeks later. Seems surgery threw my body out of wack - that was 44 days ago.

Good idea w the sauerkraut! I bet you took antibiotics during or after your surgery. The sauerkraut will help you rebuild good bacteria!

Maria Michelle
I did for 5 days

Give kefir a try. Love that stuff.

Fermented milk. Lots of natural probiotics. You can buy it unsweetened. It is tart sorta like greek yogurt or buttermilk. Makes a great smoothie base too.

Adding to my list - Thank you!

Kombucha. Add kombucha to your list too.
I avoid gluten too.

Ginger tea, sauerkraut and kimchii really helped my digestion get kick started. Look into making your own Ginger tea...pretty easy.

Maria Michelle
My friend just showed me how to make it :) Thanks. Matthew.
