'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

About the theory wich says that gerd is caused by low acid, instead of too much acid?

Hi everyone!Has any of you heard about the theory wich says that gerd is caused by low acid, instead of too much acid? It goes like this:if you have less acid than normal, your stomach pH will rise and this will encourage bacteria to thrive and those bacteria will consume carbs that you put in your body ,producing gas and this is supposed to be the reason behind GERD mechanics. Youtube and google are filled with this theory and there are many people commenting about how well they ended after taking some acid supliments and some staff like that. I'm new to GERD and it's makig my life a nightmare. It started with me having a hoarse voice in september 2015 and since then everithing got worse. My endoscopy was ok. I was prescribed ppi but i choose to be on a diet, which worked for me at that time. Six months later my simptoms returned, but this time with some new stuff going on(pyrozis, gas and others)Took the ppi for one week and also followed a diet and everything went back to normal for one month .After this one month everything came back but 10 times worse. Now i have a lot more symptoms. I dont have heartburn, but my throat is burning like hell and everytime i try to eat i get nausea and feel like vomiting. Today i've visited a gastroentorologist and asked a few question about this low acid theory and she said that this theory is not embraced by medical community. What do you guys think? AND BESIDES THAT? HAS ANY OF YOU REGISTERED ANY SIGNIFICANT PROgress with their gerd, like curing it? Or this desease is chronic and will stick to me for ever? This is the article i was talking about. https://chriskresser.com/get-rid-of-heartburn-and-gerd-forever-in-three-simple-steps/ thank you.

I saw a consultant today and she said it is possible to have low acid. I have some heartburn and discomfort between shoulder blades. I also burp a lot. I had a endoscopy and biopsy a year ago. Just very mild inflammation due to reflux. She has ordered two tests the barium and the one where you wear a tube through the nose for 24 hours. She does not believe in handing out PPI unless she is sure they are needed.I was quite impressed with her.

My functional doctor told me ppl have low acid not high acid. I was going great on betaine hcl with pepsin with a clean diet. Well since I was feel good went off and ate all the junk I use to eat. Needless to say I am in a mess. I am on ppis cause my voice is very hoarse. But once it calms down I will go back to hcl with pepsin and follow a clean diet.

Maria Mercieri have you tried digestive enzymes, probiotics. Digestive enzymes help break down food.

I did for short while and really should have kept taking them but I stopped.

I am conflicted to... On d other hand I never had gerd until I was put on a ppi for stomach pain from nsaid so I'm sort of believing the low acid theory idkn... I'm trying some digestive enzymes and probiotics.

Best way to test that theory is to take in some hydrochloric acid. If you feel better after that then you are one of those people.

I was trying to get the hcl but they only want to sell by d bottles I wanted retail because a bottle is $150 here in Trinidad I just wanted a few tabs to see if they work.

Merila Apple cider vinegar. If it burns your stomach you have high acid . It's 1 TBS with 6 oz water. I read that some where.

It burns my oesophagus though so I can't drink it I may look into acv tabs

Look it up before trying. Don't it if you have ulcers

ASk doctor. Anecdotal evidence for this only.
