'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

Beata Pietras
Just stopped and no just continued my diet.

Sherri Bowers Graybeal
i have been on them for at least 15 years

Nicola Ridgeway
Yeh i have

Micheal Lyons
Have you had any side effects?

Lisa Locke
Calcium deficiency, bone pain & B12 deficiencies. These healed bones & helped gerd. Got off meds, just not best for me.

Angie Richards Moeder 18 years....

Lisa Sigal Angie
may i ask if you have any side effects taking it for so long?

Angie Richards Moeder
Absolutely none. I started off with Prilosec when it was still prescription then the doctor switched me to Protonix a few years later when I was pregnant. I've tried several times to get off the Protonix but was not successful.

Lisa Sigal Angie
thank you for your response. May i also ask what are your symptoms, does ppi still help you to control your symptoms?

Angie Richards Moeder
Lisa Sigal my main symptoms are chest pain and throat tightness/lump. The PPI controls my symptoms very well but I do stay away from caffeine, citrus, and tomato based foods as they can sometimes set off my symptoms.

Lisa Sigal Angie
were you ever considering surgery? I've been taking ppis for 5 years. Went to so many GIs. One tells me to do the surgery because of bad side effects off ppis, another one tells better take ppis since surgeries are not 100% successful. So they all say different things.

Angie Richards Moeder
I'm embarrassed to say that until I joined this group a few months ago I didn't realize the possible consequences of the meds. My family practitioner never brought it up! I have an appointment in a few weeks and am going to request a referral to a specialist.

Lisa Sigal Angie
do you take any other supplements together with ppis?

Angie Richards Moeder
Lisa Sigal no supplements.

Sally Steele
4 years .first omeprazole then lanzoprozal .packed in 5 weeks ago .not felt better .ppi did not clear my throat issues and I had loads of side effects.

Bruce Wilson
For the throat try sipping, or gargle and swallow, high ph water. I don't buy into the guzzling gallons of the stuff to change you body's acidity because it just fights to keep balance ... but ... studies do show that PH 8.8 or higher "instantly and permanently denatures pepsin" which is a digestive enzyme that not only refluxes but can also aerosolize and reach into the sinus and lungs. Testing has found it in both places. I'll gargle and swallow 4 to 6 times before bed, or sip it when having any type of symptom, and have gotten good relief. You're basically using it "topically" in the laryngeal zone. I have even used it in a netti pot for a sinus rinse. Conversely you don't want to take it with meals, because you need to pepsin for the food in the stomach. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22844861

15 years 30 grams once a day and just 3 days ago was given twice a day ..

Gemma Louise Thirlwall
Mg surely 😃

Lisa Sigal
Vilma, 30 grams stopped working for you that's why they increased the dose? Do you have any side effects from ppis? Have you ever considered surgery?

Michael Miller
Michael Miller Have had reflux for over thirty years. Been on ppi’s almost twenty years

Lisa Sigal Michael may i ask do you have any side effects from taking them for so long? Have you ever considered surgery?

Michael Miller No side effects like kidney or liver damage. I did have some gastric polyps removed a few years ago. I have done everything such as raised head of bed, no eating three hours before bed time, and eliminating a lot of things from my diet. Gastric doctor said my hernia is only 3 cm’s and medicine is controlling reflux reasonably well so he does not recommend surgery yet.

Lisa Sigal
Michael Miller Do you take any other supplements together with ppi?

Michael Miller
I take rantidine but no supplements

Lisa Sigal
So you take ppis in the morning and rantidine at night? I do the same

Michael Miller
My doc has me taking one ppi and one rantidine in morning and evening

Annaliese Eden
10 years

Lisa Sigal Annaliese, may i ask do you have any side effects from ppis, have you ever considered surgery?

Annaliese Eden
Lisa, no side effects. I am concerned about the possibility of dementia as a result, but my physicians have never recommended surgery. I just know I can't wake up nightly choking on acid and gasping for air. That being said, I've not had the greatest of doctors and think my current IM doc is concerned due to rebound tenderness. Started dexilant, but only as samples - 2 months worth. It's hands down better than the 10+ meds I've tried. But no specific side effects.

Lisa Sigal Annaliese Eden I've been taking ppis for almost 6 years. The last 3 years ive been taking dexilant. Thats the only ppi that helped me to live more or less normal life. What ppis did you take for 10 years?

Lisa Sigal Annaliese Eden as far as GI doctors. They dont know anything. Im upset at whole situation. I went to probably 6 different GIs. Some were.telling me go do surgery, ppis are bad, and others were telling me keep taking ppis, surgeries are not 100% successful and you may get more complications. So i dont even know who to listen. Its terrible

Annaliese Eden
I know. My best friend of 30 yrs is a family practitioner. She keeps me updated on latest info generally. Every GI I've seen is a joke. My current Internal Med doc seems fabulous....we will see. As for which ones.... all if these....protonix probably goes back 20 years.

Annaliese Eden

Waiting for issues with my back teeth....plus I have apnea (longer than gerd) which I'm trying to get treated for.....

Lisa Sigal Annaliese Eden so you've been switching between those pills because they would stop working for you?

Annaliese Eden
Yes. Or moving on the the newest version to try....at one time I was on prilosec x 2 a day along with Zantac at night. Because of breakthrough issues.

Nicola Ridgeway
Annaliese Eden is that a doctor?

Kathy Beale
My husband was on omerprazle 28years. Been off about 2 months now. He uses the breathing/ drop technique and drinks bicarbonate soda and water morning and night. He tries to eat very carefully. Greasy type foods and white bread are a big no for him. He has never liked spicy foods ever, even before hh.

Lisa Sigal
Kathy, how was he able to stop taking them? Did he wean off?

Kathy Beale
Lisa yes he weaned off them over one month. He had good and bad days. But that also depends on the foods he ate. He was in his early 20s when he was diagnosed and told he would be medicated for life. Until recently a doctor mentioned he should try to get off the meds. Grant had looked into the side effects and he had most of them over the years, including atrial fibrillation. Hospitalization and many tests came back without answers, we now know it was side effects of the meds. It's been awful for him, but he is getting better every day.

Lisa Sigal
Kathy may i ask how he weaned off in one month? How was he reducing the dose? How is he controlling symptoms without ppis?

Donald Stokes 15 years

Lisa Sigal
Donald, may i ask do you have any side effects from ppis? Have you ever considered surgery?

Donald Stokes
Lisa Sigal, I’ve not really had any sides with ppis other than maybe a bit of IBS but I take probiotics to help me with that.
I’ve considered surgery many times, what put me off is I knew someone who had it done but had to go back and have it done again it took a year out of his life.so that’s why I just continue with the medication.

Lisa Sigal
Donald I've also considered surgery many times, but after reading some scary posts, i have second thoughts about it. I also went to 5 different GIs, and they all have different opinions about surgery. Some say keep talking PPIs and dont do the surgery. My current one constantly scares me about bad side effects of ppis and suggests me to do the surgery. May i ask what symptoms do you have? Also what brand of probiotics do you take? Im currently looking for one.

Donald Stokes
Lisa Sigal, Well nearly all Drugs you take have sides you just have to weigh up the pros and cons.for me if I don’t take ppis I’m in agony from the reflux plus I have Barrett’s so I can’t afford to let the acid burn.Maybe in the future there will be something else or a better kind of surgery who knows but until then I’ll keep taking the meds. For me personally the surgery is to risky and also I haven’t got the time to be going through with it at the minute.
These probiotics I use and are really good,I buy them over the counter here in the UK,I think you can get them online.Hope this helps.

Gigi Robertson
I reckon I’m starting to get side effects which is why I’m going to try and wean myself off. Going to go on an elimination diet for 6 weeks first to work out what doesn’t agree with me. Then have a chat with my GP to set up a plan of attack to get off them.

Lisa Sigal
Gigi, may i ask what side effects you started getting?

Gigi Robertson
Brain fog & short term memory loss, stomach tenderness after eating. More and more foods not agreeing with me. Fatigue, hair loss & generally not feeling well. I went and had an endoscopy after going to the gastro specialist & all they did was increase my PPI’s. No suggestion as to what was causing it or how to fix it.

Lisa Sigal
Gigi Robertson , im actually taking ppis for almost 6 years and 2 weeks ago i started feeling almost the same symptoms as you. One of my other symptoms i started feeling bloated after i eat. It never happened to me before. Im also trying to figure out whats going on.

Gigi Robertson
Lisa Sigal , same here. Bloating and feeling yuk. My PPI’s were increased about 6 months ago and it seems to coincide with my symptoms. I didn’t really have bad reflux before but it was irritated by taking anti inflammatories. Now I’m a mess and getting worse. Nothing showed up on my endoscopy other than mild inflammation. Time will tell as I plan to do this elimination diet and get off the PPI’s. I have also started taking digestive enzymes before each meal which seems to be helping a bit.

Lisa Sigal
Gigi Robertson what ppis do you take and how many grams? Also what brand of digestive enzymes do you take?

Gigi Robertson
Lisa Sigal 20mg Omeprazole taken in the morning. 300mg Ranitidine taken before bed. I’m in Australia but I take the life-space brand of digestive enzymes
acid reflux herbal

Sally Steele
I gave up ppi 5 weeks ago after 4 years initially on omeprazole then lanzoprozal as omeprazole made me very ill. Within 48 hours of stopping I felt better than I had in years.no bloating ,constipation, wind, back and rib pain, stomach pain after eating, and mentally I felt like a new person.i continue to take ranitadine and gaviscon and I am trying to work out triggers.

Gigi Robertson
How did you go off the omeprazole? Did you do it gradually?

Lisa Sigal
Sally Steele how long did it take you to wean off?

Lisa Sigal
Sally Steele also may i find out what are your symptoms?

Sally Steele
Lisa Sigal I visited my doctor to discuss ppi .I said I didn't see the point in taking them as I still had the same sore throat I had had for years and all the other symptoms I listed in my previous post above .she told me to just stop taking them so she could run some other tests .within a couple of days all other symptoms gone .so I put everything else down to ppi .they have ruined my life for 4 years

Sally Steele
So I did not wean off .I just took gaviscon and ranitadine.

Gigi Robertson
It has been suggested I go off them gradually because I have been on them for so long. I'll book an appointment with my GP and see what he thinks. I went off them for 24 hours and I felt very unwell so I'm back on them. Still have the other symptoms but not as bad as I did when I went off them.

Sally Steele
GigiRobertson I was so bad with omeprazole I just stopped taking it .I was on holiday at the time and within days all symptoms went .I went to Dr when I got home and was told omeprazole is known for side effects but is prescribed first as it is the cheapest .at that point I was given lanzoprozal. More side effects although not quite as bad as omeprazole. Then back to dr

Gigi Robertson
It's only in the last 12 months I have been getting worse symptoms. I only had mild reflux in the first place when they put me on it 10 years ago. I'm amazed they just kept writing me prescriptions. I wish I knew then what I do now, it would have saved a lot of grief.

Lisa Sigal
Sally Steele i dont know how you could just stop it. I also tried to wean off, but i guess i did it too quick so i had rebound. I had to increase the dosage back the way it was.

Sally Steele
Gigi Robertson that is exactly why I went back to dr.its great taking ppi if you feel better but if you don't what is the point !as I went on to find out most of what I was experiencing was actually caused by ppi .I now only have the throat problems managed by diet .once or twice I have had a reflux day .surprisingly I think mushrooms are the problem! Currently trying to work that one out

Lisa Sigal
Sally Steele i also have a sore throat. I have LPR. Trying to do the diet as well. Its just take so long to heal

Sally Steele
Lisa Sigal I have lpr too .had a sore throat for years now .some days better than others.

Tom Owen
35 year now tried them all I would say

Lisa Sigal
Tom, which one do you take now? May i ask if you had any side effects from taking them for so long?

Related Post: Could someone who is well behaved with their GERD diet share with me their typical daily intake?

Tom Owen
Right now I am on pantaprazole sane as protonix. No side effects but I have never had side effects from any except they stop working after a few years

Lisa Sigal
Tom so you took other brands before? They stop working after awhile? I take dexilant for 5 years

Tom Owen
In the 70s I started nexxium and by 80 had to switch. I switch every few years. They all stop after awhile

Tom Owen
I dont want the surgery but might have to. Or buy a real nice recliner lol

Lisa Sigal
Tom Owen may i ask what symptoms do you have?

Tom Owen
I have no valve left basically so I get reflux every night and often during the day.

Wendy Schwartz
I’ve been on them 15-20 years and have tried to get off them many times. Each time the rebound is worse. I’m going to try again, this time armed with meds. I have Lidocaine to gargle for throat pain and Librax for stomach pain. The Librax has a benzo in it, Librium, so I’m seeing if I can get the components of Librax instead so I can dole out the benzo portion. As far as surgery is concerned, I did the Stretta. Not sure if it helped. I will try to do whatever is necessary to avoid the fundoplication surgery. I know an emergency room doc who has seen a lot of people in pain from it and there’s nothing she can do to help them. Stanford has a new surgery they are testing where they place a pacemaker on your LES to stimulate it to close. Right now you can get the surgery for free, so says my GI doc that teaches at Stanford.

Marilene F Paragioudakis
Do it slowly, maybe take it every other day then every 2 days and so on...

Lisa Sigal
Wendy may i find for how long do you have a sore throat? Do you have LPR? When did you do stretta?

Dominique Mimnagh
Have you heard of Linx? It’s magnet they put around Les. Very good results! I used Zantac to wean off ppi then gaviscon, then licorice tablets and slippery elm. Whilst coming off try and go vegetarian or better still vegan. You will produce less acid. Good luck. I would get some sleeping pills too. Have u elevated bed? That’s must for me.

Lisa Sigal
Dominique for how long did you take ppis before you weaned off? Do you personally have Linx?

Dominique Mimnagh
6 months was on ppis then another 4 months in h2 blockers (Zantac). No I don’t have Linx but I’m considering it. I’m on Patient forum and I speak to a few people who’ve had it.

Lisa Sigal
Dominique Mimnagh may i ask what symptoms do you have?

Dominique Mimnagh
Chronic reflux (mainly at night now but was 24/7 first year). I’ve had it 5 years. Bloating, occasional stomach pain (burning), constipation, sore chest in the morning, nausea and headaches. Stomach grumbles and chest gurgles a lot when lying down. Had bad anxiety and depression with it but anxiety is getting better. I’ve just started HRT to see if reflux improves.

Dominique Mimnagh
Lisa Sigal Dominique Mimnagh follow this method:
Ashitaba supplement - 3x/day before meal
Wheatgrass supplement - 3x/day before meal
Natural Vitamin E 400 to 1000 iu - 1x/day
Amino Acid (Multivitamins) - 1x/day (30 to 90 days)
Yakult - 1 to 3x/day
- eat fruits and veggies
- eat small amount at least every 2 hours
Avoid the following while undergoing treatment:
- salty foods
- sour foods
- oily foods
- sweets
- tea
- coffee
- soda/softdrinks
- milk
- alcohol
- skipping meals
- full meal(then gradual once recovered)

Dominique Mimnagh
I’m trying the above protocol but also using Manuka honey. 3 tsp per day on empty stomach. I’m pescatarian at mo but trying to go vegan!!!

Dominique Mimnagh
I’m not eating every 2 hrs yet! Just 3 meals. Green smoothie for breakfast. Cooked veggies and fish for lunch and dinner veggies n fish.

Dominique Mimnagh
I’m definitely feeling better!!!!

Dominique Mimnagh
Not taking Ashitaba tablets yet. They haven’t arrived.

Dominique Mimnagh
Taking this before meals and eating Manuka honey tween meals. Eating mainly vegetarian/vegan but gAve into chic curry last night ( was organic chic 😬).

Dominique Mimnagh
But no reflux after and I watched tense program and I had argument with daughter!! So very good signs.

Nicola Ridgeway
Dominique Mimnagh do they think your reflux could be hormonal x

Dominique Mimnagh
Nicola Ridgeway my husband believes very much that it’s hormonal!! I’ve been taking hrt for about 1 1/2 months now and I’m a lot calmer (barring last couple of days - had anxiety) think that’s detoxing though. I’m very tired, lots of headaches and eczema is worse. I believe I’m going through healing crisis.
I started HRT to try and cure reflux so we will see. Watch this space. I definitely think there is a link. I had never had reflux in my life, not even when I was pregnant. It started when I was 40 when I must of been pre menopausal.

Lisa Sigal
Dominique Mimnagh for how long have you been following the above method? Do you eat only fruits and vegetables? You are not taking ppis correct?

Dominique Mimnagh
Lisa Sigal only for a week or two but stomach is so much better. I believe the Manuka is killing bad bacteria and the probiotic is obviously adding good. I’m feeling good for not eating meat. I’m eating fish and seafood though. Green smoothie for brekky, cooked veggies for lunch and veggies n Fish for dinner. The Manuka I’m using is NPA 15 + and mgo 514 (Barnes brand) expensive but it’s working. I’m not taking ppis. I’ve been off them for years but I was taking gaviscon double strength not so long ago every night!! Since on the new regime no gaviscon at all.

Lisa Sigal
Dominique Mimnagh how do you take manuka honey on the empty stomach 3 times a day?

Linda Meador
Stewart McGinnis 30 years and I’m in beginning stages of chronic kidney disease. Thank you PPI’s. Have off about 7 weeks. Eating is getting easier but will always have to be cautious I’m sure.

Lisa Sigal
Linda, i'm sorry to hear. What brand of ppis did you take?

Linda Meador Stewart McGinnis
Lisa Sigal nexium, Prilosec and omo...can’t spell, think it’s generic Prilosec.

Tom Owen
Sorry about your kidneys.
Did you Dr. Say its from ppi?
I have drank half my body weight in ounces of water daily to keep the kidneys healthy.

Linda Meador
Stewart McGinnis Tom Owen no dr didn’t say what caused it. But all info sheets on scripts do. I hate h2o but am drinking.

Tom Owen
Lol yeah its not fun drinking water but its healthy

Michelle Courtney Kaye
Ive been given lamprazole is that a ppi ??

Rhonda Devlyn
Yes it is, I'm on Lansoprazole too.
