'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

4 year old boy who I'm caring for right now. He has Gerd that started last Oct when he was 3

I'm a grandmother of a 4 year old boy who I'm caring for right now. He has Gerd that started last Oct when he was 3 . He went to bed one night woke the next day throwing up and saying his pain was in back of neck. At the time we didn't know it was Gerd just found out 2 months ago. I kept telling doctors it was only after he ate. They wouldn't listen to me and sent us to physical therapy thinking he had a muscle problem in his neck. Then they did a spinal tap hoping to find something there but it came back fine .Now saying he has dystonia which I don't believe he has cause its only when he eats. He is seeing a GI now that his mother and I had to get him to on our own cause doctors wouldn't listen to us when we kept saying he's fine until he eats. He has lost 10 pounds cause it got so bad that he couldn't even eat a half of a cookie without falling to floor in pain. Now that he's on Prilosec its so much better but not 100 % . He's been scoped and they are scoping him again in Sep. Tomorrow they are doing a acid test to see how long it takes his body to digest . Sometimes we can smell straight acid on his breath. Some days he can eat a certain food and be fine with it but next day eat the same food and be in pain. Anyways my question is does anyone in this group have pain in back of neck after eating? Certain drinks and food does this to him. Poor boy loves chocolate but that's a huge trigger for his Gerd. Oh and this happen over night after having a sore throat the day before, he's had all kinds of lab work and it all comes back fine.
Just wondering about the pain in his neck.

I recommend an allergist and allergy testing too. My Gerd is allergy related and avoiding foods I'm allergic to really helps

Charlie Renee
Yes that's the next test they are going to do. I have never in all my old years have seen this before especially in such a small child. Of course I've heard of heartburn and acid reflux but I've never seen it this bad. I wish I could just take it away for him and put it on me because I hate seeing my grandbaby in pain and throwing up. He watches other children eat candy and stuff that most children love to eat and he can't have it and it just hurts to say no to him.

Jessica MacLane
I understand completely and no ice cream it's hard .

Charlie Renee
Yes I agree about the ice cream .

Kim Borders
I grew up on the GERD diet (back before it was called "GERD") and it was awful. I did it, though....the alternatives were much worse. Maybe you could try some soy ice cream?

Charlie Renee
Gosh Kim I didn't even know they made soy ice cream. I do have him on almond milk , he loves milk . Did you get better as you got older? I just don't understand how this happen over night. He went from a healthy three-year-old to a 4 year old who's always sick and in pain. He will be starting pre school and I'm so worried that he will get picked on because when he's in pain he tilts his head to the side and falls to the floor until the pain goes away and then he lifts it back up. I will look around for soy ice cream cause he loves his ice cream and he just cries when I have to tell him no . Thank you so much for letting me know about it.

Kim Borders
I had a lot of surgeries and procedures to get better, I'm sorry to say. I hope your little one doesn't have to do the same! Does he sleep at an incline? Start teaching him to lie on his left side, too.

Charlie Renee
I put two pillows behind him and starting tonight try to get him to sleep on his side. I'm so sorry you had to go through surgeries. I know it had to be a scary thing especially for a young one. I have a 1 year old granddaughter that's had two open heart surgeries and due for another one at any time. Thank you so much for the tips on this awful thing.

Kim Borders
My parents propped the head of my bed up so that I slept at an incline. The main thing is to make sure his upper abdomen is at the angle - not just his head.

Charlie Renee
Oh I see , I can put something under his mattress that would work maybe.

Kim Borders
yeah, that could work, too!

Maxine Medina
Yes I have pain in ubber back and neck as well.

Charlie Renee
Oh my goodness Maxine Medina. I hate that you have that but happy my grandson isn't the only one . One GI said he has heard of that but the other GI said she has never had a patient with neck pain from gerd. He will fall to the floor grabbing back of his neck saying it hurts. Sometimes it will go away in a few hours or if he throws up it goes away right a way.

Maxine Medina
I also have head and ear pressure so you might want to have him go to an ENT as well i have gotten alot better as long as I stay on an strict diet and take my meds as prescribed

Charlie Renee
Will do and he's getting tested for allergies.

Jessica MacLane
This is exactly what happened to my son. The doctors would NOT listen!!!! They still don't! It is soooo hard for them to listen and treat my son. Our son started to show at 4 also symptoms. We are still struggling with it. He is also on ppi but now we are starting twice a day instead of once because it's getting worse. My son complains of acid in his throat like a lump in the back of his throat. Could it be that? He complains of a sore throat and has a cough.

Amanda Rose
Yes, that's how I feel almost all the time... like I have a lump in my throat. Poor little guy. I hope he finds some relief soon.

Jessica I'm so sorry your little one is suffering too. My grandson is on omeprazole twice a day. I hate him being on it but his was so bad he lost ten pounds .I had one doctor try to say he was faking for attention, I was so upset felt like no one was helping him and he was losing weight. I even took a flash light and could see what I call scales in back of his throat and I told the doctors and they still didn't listen. It was his mother who finally asked for him to see a GI. He did have a scope last month and it shows he has Eosinophils which they said could be from a allergy but also said he didn't have enough to indicate it definitely is from an allergy. Tomorrow at the hospital they are doing a gastric emptying scan. They have to figure this out. Some days he can eat a certain food with no problems then next day eat the same thing and have pain and be sick, I just don't understand it. I think what he's feeling is the lump in the throat just don't know how to tell me.

Jessica MacLane
Charlie Renee wow I'm so sorry. Yes my son hasn't been tested for food allergies but the allergy doctor doesn't suspect it. He was tested for environmental allergy and negative. My son complains about the exact same thing about the lump in his throat. We tried to do a ph 24 monitor but it wouldn't go through his nose his andnoids are big. Let me know how it goes please I am interested myself as I don't have a lot of support from other moms as their kids don't have it.

Amanda Rose
Charlie Renee Wow! I would've lost my s*** if a doctor tried to tell me my son was faking an illness to get attention! I've been told I'm faking it too and nothing upsets me more than that! Poor little guy. I hope he feels better soon.

Search for the group pediatric feeding disorders/ftt/gerd/and kiddos with feeding tubes. I get burning in the back of my throat with my gets and it is completely random as to triggers for me.

Charlie Renee
I'm sorry to hear that you too have this. I never heard of so many with this . Back in my day it was just heartburn. I'm thinking his mother is on that group. I'm stumped about him complaining of neck pain.

Kristy Kaiser
It may be throat but at his age he sees it as his neck. I have worked at an urgent care and see it A lot where a kid injures like their elbow but they describe it as their arm for example. I had reflux as a baby then it went away til 5 years ago.

Charlie Renee
Now he did have problems as a baby with spitting up acid smelling vomit so they had to change his formula 3 times. I'm thinking your right about the throat hurting and him thinking the neck.

Jessica MacLane
That's also what my son struggled with as a baby.

Kim Borders
I'm thinking the sore neck could just be the best way he knows to describe the pain in his throat? A lot of adults with neck/eat/throats pain.
I am so sorry your baby is going through this. It sounds so EERILY close to my experience. I've been fighting this since 4. My parents discovered it when I started throwing up frequently after meals. They had to PUSH doctors to listen. They also swear the ONLY symptom I had was sour breath and lots of hiccups.

Jessica MacLane
I just don't understand why it's so hard to push the doctors. I struggle all the time with all of them.

Kim Borders
Because they don't believe kids can come on with this THIS violently, I guess. They think the parents are sensationalizing. When I had my babies I didn't accept "no" for an answer and pretty much ALL of what we did was precautionary. I just told them flatly "Mine showed up fast and hard. My parents never saw it coming. I'm not taking that chance with my kids."

Jessica MacLane
Kim did your kids have it also?

Kim Borders
I'm still considering the possibility in my eldest. She's 7 and just this past weekend said to me her hiccups hurt (and they're big, deep hiccups with bouts that last a while - like I get) and the pediatrician has diagnosed her as having allergies (now I'm thinking maybe LPR), and then she started coughing and clearing her throat all last weekend. Her father and I are divorced, but I contacted him and mentioned I want her to have an Upper GI.

Charlie Renee
My grandson does cough and burp loud. Twice since Oct he has had what looks like water shoot out of his mouth. Once I saw it happen and the other time he was playing in his room and came crying saying water shot out of his nose and mouth.

Kim Borders
Yes. After one of my surgeries, my GI was telling my mom I literally could NOT projectile vomit. Mid sentence...guess what happened? Across the room. 😔

Jessica MacLane
Charlie Renee our main symptoms is chronic cough, tickle in throat and it got so bad congestion and nose sounding blocked

Charlie Renee
Sometimes he gets a runny nose that just last a few hours.

Joy L Wildermuth
Try a clean eating diet for a While. I had to go on that to get my gerd under control.

Jehhu Riñan
Ur right mate!!! It well control soon unless u stop taking medicine!! Is not really good in our body!!!

Joy L Wildermuth
I added Arbonne nutrition kit to the clean eating and I'm off the ppis and antacids.

Charlie Renee
I will look that up Joy L Wildermuth. The new GI we are seeing thinks this could have happen from the sore throat he had the day before this all started. Probiotics is what we talked about with his new GI last week. He wants to see what comes about with the testing they are doing tomorrow before he starts anything new.

Becky Gail Shah
What u have described sounds like he is having trouble with his vagus nerve.Has he been checked for Gastroparesis?

Charlie Renee
He had a scoping done last month and they took biopsies and said that he does Esophagitis And some Eosinophils.

Kathleen Tunnicliffe
I have pain in the back of my neck when my reflux is bad, particularly when my throat is burning and tight as well. The acid from reflux can cause your muscles to contract. Stress and tension from the pain can make your neck and shoulders tight as well. If you can find some deep breathing and relaxation exercises for kids and teach him, it may help. Poor little man. Its hard enough for an adult to handle let alone a boy. Hes lucky hes got a Nana like you.

Marj Clark
I think you need to go through the basic tests first and look for allergies. Milk sets me off and my mum said I didn't tolerate it as a baby. She said I threw it up a lot. Or possible coeliacs, lower intestinal issues like colitis, or h pylori infection. These are all treated accordingly when diagnosed. Sometimes I find these GERD groups scary because people here have severe conditions. Don't think about gastroparesis or feeding tubes or anything on that end of the scale until you've exhausted the less complex options!

Dana Bryant Fergusson
Charlie Renee When my daughter was 3 this happened to her (likely after a bout of antibiotics ). They did an upper GI and determined all was normal but she was still having upset stomach. Took her to a naturopath and she determined many food sensitivities including chocolate, dairy and citrus. We cut those out for 3 months, added a probiotic, and she was eventually better. At 19, she still has occasional heartburn (likely related to the genes I gave her!? but at least she knows the triggers.

Charlie Renee
We got to the Hospital early they fed him a piece of toast and some plain scrambled eggs and then did a scan of his stomach and back side . They did another scan an hour later and he was in pain and we could hear him swallowing and he was having some pain. We ended up staying all day . They took 6 scans one for every hour. Should have test results back in a few days. I'm hoping something shows up but don't want it to be bad......something that has an easy fix. I have a 1 year old granddaughter that's already had two open heart surgeries and supposed to have another one next month I just really don't know how much more we can take.

Ashley Renée
This is my son, and I just got his results from his gastric emptying scan. He has Gastroparesis. It is not severe enough that he needs a Gtube, but they did start him on a medicine that will help his stomach digest food normally. When a normal person should only have 0-28% of food left in their stomach, Adrian had a little over half of what he ate left. On the last scan, when a normal person is suppose to have 0-10% of food left, he had 37% left. Since his stomach is not digesting food fast enough, it's causing acid to back up into his throat.
