'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

I have been off omeprazole for about 5 months now and my acid reflux is still horrible

I'm losing my mind! I have been off omeprazole for about 5 months now and my acid reflux is still horrible. I eat super healthy. I eat small meals. I eat slowly. I raise my bed. I exercise and I'm not overweight. But I still burp up acid everyday non stop. The burning in my chest, throat, and neck never go away. I tried all supplements and they don't do crap for me. Zantac helps but I don't wanna medicine everyday forever. What the heck do I do? Has anyone cured themselves?! Thanks!

Have you been checked to see if you have a weak stomach valve?

Matt Treglia
I haven't. But even if that was the problem. What could be done for it?

Maria Mercieri
Matt Treglia surgery in some cases

Lindsay Gill
Check into the LINX device. It's less intense than the fundoplication, with more success rate in real life patients so far.

Jennifer Harrow Wise
I agree - I am doing everything you are doing faithfully, but my LES does not close at all, so the only option is surgery. Having an endoscopy is very helpful...it will give you a better understanding if there is a "malfunction" that you are dealing with

Matt Treglia
I had one and nothing was solved

Julieta Locquiao
What are your other symptoms

Matt Treglia
Burping, burning in my chest, thrOat, and neck. Burning/dry throat and chest.

Kasey King
Matt Treglia i get that too. My les is too short!!!!

Wendy Schwartz
I agree, don't go down the PPI road - like I did. Go to a naturopath.

Matt Treglia
What would a naturopath tell me? What did they tell you?

Tony Laferla
Im sick of omeprazole but I'm scared to come off them

Matt Treglia
Tony Laferla in very happy to be off them, but my gerd is still in full effect.

Tony Laferla
Its hell man.
I have to try and stop at some stage

Matt Treglia
Tony Laferla it's totally doable it sucks at first, but gets better. But like I said I'm not cured at all.

Judi Gee
I was told the acid reflux "burning" feeling affects your esophagus, which can eventually turn into Barrett's Esophagus. That's a pre-cancerous condition. I have to have an endoscopy every two or three years. I don't know if it's related to gerd, but any possibility you have an ulcer, or small perforation?
I do take omeprazole, and I know the consequences. However, I just cannot take gerd and associated difficulties everyday. I'm 73 so you might say I chose the way that gives me one good day at a time.
If you haven't done so yet, look up leaky gut syndrome and its various stages. Good luck!

Rhonda Osborne Schmidt
Take licorice root, aloe Vera juice, betaine, maalox helped me, heal your gut with the above plus a good probiotic.

Simon Tivey
Try the fast tract diet, I'm giving it a go. Seems to of helped a lot of people.

Matt Treglia
Thanks. What's that?

Simon Tivey
It's a high fat low carb/sugar diet, it's all about eating food that doesn't ferment in the stomach.

Simon Tivey
Mainly lots of meat and veg, jasmine rice is recommend as well. There's a facebook group you can join just search for fast tract diet.

Matt Treglia
great thanks!

Stuart Tseng
Matt Treglia Have you tried probiotics, digestive enzymes, or HCL? How's your digestion?

Matt Treglia
I guess my digestion sucks since I have bad reflux haha. I tried all those never tried hcl since I have so much reflux I figured more acid wouldn't help

Kathy Rojas
Simon Tivey how long have you been on this diet and is it working for you?

Simon Tivey
Only just started and not really started it properly yet as I'm crap at sticking to diets, I did do two days where I just ate chicken, turkey and roasted vegetables in olive oil and rice and I did seem to feel a bit better for a couple of days after (reduced nausea and stomach bubbling) but might of just been a fluke. I've cut right down on sugar and bread for a while anyway which has helped with my symptoms quite a bit.

Judi Gee
Simon Tivey--is that similar to the keto diet?

Simon Tivey
Not sure, not looked into the keto diet.

Moriah Fletcher
I'm am currently doing an elimination diet. I am having the same issues you are. A friend of mine says he hasn't had reflux since going on this diet.

Matt Treglia
how does an elimination diet work?

Moriah Fletcher
Basically you eliminate all problematic foods that you could be sensitive to. Wheat, dairy, sugar and nightshade veggies for about a month. Reintroduce new food slowly to see what food is giving you problems. My friend saw all of his symptoms disappear in two weeks. He's in the process of reintroduction now.

Tracey Friedman
This has helped me... I'm not affiliated in any way...
acid reflux

Matt Treglia
I actually have the book. I want to do the diet but don't want to read the whole book haha. I already know and understand all the information. For the diet. Do I just eat the foods it tells me to eat for 28 days?

Tracey Friedman
Just skip to Section 3 there's a list of foods there, and two complete weekly menus if you're into that...

Matt Treglia
Tracey Friedman do I need to follow the menus or can I just eat those items listed?

Matt Treglia
How long until u felt it working

Tracey Friedman
For 28 days you can only eat foods with a pH higher than 5... Then, in maintenance you can begin to reintroduce things between 4 and 5... It really would be helpful to read the book ;)

Tracey Friedman
Everyone is different, but I felt the difference in just a few days...

Tracey Friedman
Oh! also, you need to weigh the fruits and veggies. You need at least a pound of veggies (preferably 1/2 cooked and 1/2 raw) and a total of at least 1/2 pound of fruit (from the list)...

Elizabeth Rudd Greene
Do you take probiotics and probiotic foods? I'm completely off ppis for over a year.

Matt Treglia
Yes I do

Nicole Forbes Dupont
What probiotic do you use?

Simon Tivey
I'm trying milk Kefir at the moment as well as the fast tract diet (although keep cheating now and then as apple pies keep appearing out of nowhere covered in ice cream) I only have some kefir in the morning on an empty stomach as i've found it's causes too much bubbling having it after food. It's supposed to have lots of good bacteria in it which I think most of us with gerd are lacking.

Becky Gail Shah
Have u tried HCL with Pepsin from the health food store?

Related post: My acid reflux has been getting better

Matt Treglia
Never tried hcl but doesn't that give more acid?

Bobby Ali Zaman
Yes, sometimes the issue is we don't have enough acid. I had your symptoms and have been on HCL with pepsin before food and water with digestive bitters, and it has totally helped.

Matt Treglia
Bobby Ali Zaman hm ok cool I'll give it a try!

Wendy Schwartz Matt
no! Don't give it a try unless a practitioner determines you have low acid and tells you to. Acid and pepsin are the culprits according to dr Jamie Koufman. read her book Dropping Acid. You might burn the bejesus out of your stomach and throat.

Matt Treglia
I'm going to try a low acid diet first from the 28 day acid watcher, if that doesn't work I'll try hcl

Helle Brodt Hansen
I feel the same Way You do for 8 weekend now, going to the hospital tomorrow .

Matt Treglia
I feel like there's not much doctors can do 😞

Niteen
what kind of foods do you eat? have you been teted for h pylori / sibo?

Denise Grimes
Have you tried an H2 blocker?

Kasey King
Zantax is an h2 blocker

Denise Grimes
I had the surgery. It helps most people, but not me. Meds have too many side effects. I'm back to eating bland foods.

Kasey King
Denise Grimes which surgery?

Denise Grimes
I had the toupet fundiplication, gallbladder removal, and hiatal hernia repair. All at once and laproscopically. You recover quickly, but have to be on liquids for a month.

Kasey King
Denise Grimes thats the 270? Thats the one my surgeons recommending.

Denise Grimes
Yes, I had the 270. The surgeon recommended it based on my test results from my esophageal motility test and the barium test.

Natala Prince
Hi I myself used to have that same feeling and I've noticed a big change since I started juicing my juice consist of kale spanich parsley celery apple sometimes Ginger and to my surprise I helped a lot hope this can also work for u.

Matt Treglia
Is that what you eat for all your meals? I juice everyday for breakfast

Natala Prince
No matt I usually have it at lunch time.

I've been on a self imposed low fat diet for a few weeks now. It's not perfect but my GERD and LPR have improved a lot.

Neeta Raina
Check your vitamin d levels. Vit d deficiency gives digestion problems...

Marco Sarkis
are you sure that your problem is excess of acid ? have you ever tried lemon , apple vinegar ? maybe if your problem is lack of acid , if your acidify your diet , you can handle it .

Matt Treglia
I tried the high acid diet it makes it worse

Marco Sarkis
but the acid diet do not work with ppis , were you taking ppis at the same time or were clean for a while ?

Jaime Rodriguez
Try d-limonene. It worked wonders for me. I eat pretty much anything now.

Kasey King
Is that a vitamin?

Jaime Rodriguez
D-limonene. It is made by Jarrow Formulas. Google for more info.

Kelsey Blais-Krob
How did you take d limonene to go off ppi? I ordered it but haven't started taking it yet. I am TERRIFIED of my gerd symptoms at night... I wake up choking on acid & it is like hell.

Jaime Rodriguez
I am not sure about ppi. When I was diagnosed with acid reflux my doctor prescribed over the counter medication. But decided not to go that route because of all the terrible side effects. Went the natural way. So I started off with aloe vera juice, curcumin, food enzymes and d-limonene and Magnesium Complex.

Kelsey Blais-Krob
I keep reading about the importance of digestive enzymes & probiotics. I'm going to try Plexus. I've been on prilosec for 12 years & I'm going to try to wean off. I'll keep everyone posted. Good luck to you.

Wendy Schwartz
Good luck to you. I couldn't get off after 15 years.

Steve Shuck
I found something that finally helps me. I mix a protein drink called Vegan Smart that I buy at Sams club, there is another called Vega One that is available online or Whole Foods. I add it to my blender with blue berries, spinach, baby carrots, chia seeds, dry powder peanut butter and ice. I have no fire in my chest when I drink it, once I skip for a couple days which I have while on vacation it returns and I'm miserable. Try it it works! Message me if you want more details.
I didn't start drinking this because I wanted to cure my acid reflux, I started drinking it because I wanted more fiber in my diet, what a nice surprise.

Cindy Hicks
I cured myself by going gluten-free. If I eat gluten, symptoms come right back.

Gertrudes Milan Pacio
what kind of food that gluten free thanks

Cindy Hicks
No I don't have Celiac Disease David Shon. Gertrudes Milan Pacio, anything containing wheat has gluten in it....anything made with flour for example.

Stacy Cook
Same for me and dairy.

Stacy Cook
Rice is fine for me on a gluten free diet david.

Cindy Hicks
I seem to have reactions to all grains, but to a much lesser degree than with wheat. Honestly, I don't really think it's wheat that I am reacting to as much as it is the pesticides sprayed on the wheat. All I know in the end was that I had a myriad of symptoms that stopped when I eliminated wheat from my diet. I now can eat raw onions, spicy sauces, tomato sauces and garlic...etc without the torture of acid reflux. At the end of my GERD battle it seemed I had acid reflux all of the time. It was such torture. It was severe😩

Cindy Hicks
I also deal with diverticulitis which is a type of inflammatory condition so wheat could have definitely played a role in that disease as well. I don't understand it all yet, but am glad to actually find the cure instead of having to take pills for the rest of my life to treat symptoms.

New Idea
avoid stress and medicines, avoid hanger, bottled drinks wz gas contained, I have got recovery over a year.

Spencer Sharp
Do you have high or low stomach acid? Have you tried going gluten free? Do you know if you have any trigger foods?

Matt Treglia
Idk how do u find that out

Spencer Sharp
Google it, there is 3 methods, two which can be done at home.

Vanessa Jones Pacheco
I was told if you have reflux daily it's better to stay on meds, because you can develop cancer but idk I don't take the meds either I was scolded for not taking them.

Ralph Sorrentino
being on Zantac is better than being on Nexium or Omeprazole. i'm trying to ween myself off the Zantac by taking " Digest Smart" and Advanced DGL vitamins. So we shall see. I'll let you know if I have any success with that. Hang in there and take the Zantac.

Michael Paul Glowacki
Have u been tested for bacterial blooms in your intenstines? This can be caused by a lack of stomache acid not digesting carbs properly. Ths bacteria bloom....causing gas to build up. This gas puts pressure on your stomach...forcing acid up.

Jennel Krushnic Licas
Try milk kefir or water kefir ,any probiotic ...

Matt Amuchastegui
They found a small hiatal hernia in me..and, I took benzos for several years which likely relaxed the LES. I think the trick here is de stressing and somehow strengthening the LES. Like you, I only get relief on Prilosec ..Zantac makes my side hurt and skin itch. I have heard organic apple cider vinegar with the mother can cure it, actually have a friend who tried it and it took away her reflux. One capful every morning.

Matt Amuchastegui
I should add that I was taking a probiotic on an empty stomach for a few weeks and had zero heartburn

Muhd Mujibuddin
Hey there... i used to have burping and all those stuffs. It is amazing how much changes i have been noticing lately. Eg i can eat farely well portion (one fist sized of rice with veges and two dishes like chicken/fish) without having those burps. If i feel it is rather minimal i would say.
I have been practicing 6000 steps daily (coz i read somewhere it can strengthen my abd muscles) i have hiatal hernia. Improving my diaphragm and other related abd muscles definitely can alleviate the symptoms. Next, i do workout at least 6 days a week. In the beginning i couldnt do much. I do whatever workouts i can. Of course u will feel slight discomfort at first but gotta go through it. And also important to stop exercising when u r sick.
Then, i also practice abdominal breathing (breathe thru ur stomach) while meditating for 10 minutes everyday. This breathing/meditation practice helps in my gerd symptoms.
And last but not least.. dont overeat. Sleep at slanted angle. Avoid fatty/spicy food at all cost incl pizza burger etc. Replace milk with youghurt.
I hope this will help you. I wish full recovery.
