'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

Women who have been pregnant after a GERD diagnosis

I’m hoping to hear from some women who have been pregnant after a GERD diagnosis. I had some acid reflux with my first 2 but was diagnosed with GERD and slight hiatal hernia last year. Am I crazy to consider another pregnancy? Will it be miserable? Please be honest. I’d rather know before. Thanks!

Honestly not much of a difference to my GERD with all 3 of my pregnancies. It was bearable, but my symptoms are not as bad as some.
I had awful morning sickness with all 3, first 2 being girls. My boy my 3rd being worse sickness, I'd think it was to do with his GI issues as well though.

I carried on taking Omeprazolr during both my pregnancies and it was fine.

Oh just a side note, I did not take any meds for my GERD while pregnant with any of my pregnancies, I don't take any meds now either.

I am on 2 different meds and I still struggle every day. That’s partly why I wonder if it would be a bad decision.

Zoe Williams
Yes I get you, I'm struggling with it too, I just unfortunately like to stay away from meds, wondering if that's such a good idea though. I've had GERD all my life and not actually taken medication for it. But my pregnancies weren't too bad, the symptoms stayed pretty much the same apart from all the normal pregnancy stuff which is to be expected. Saying it though my symptoms aren't too bad compared to others.

Zoe have you had an endoscopy at all?

Zoe Williams
No I haven't Penny Willow. My parents took me to doctors when I was a kid quite a bit but I can't remember any of it. I haven't done anything for my GERD since being an adult, just adjusting my diet and trying to eliminate anything that's a bad trigger.

Penny Willow
Zoe if you still regularly suffer from reflux you should consider an endoscopy since long term reflux can cause damage to the esophagus.

Zoe Williams
Yes I hear you, I've tried to ignore it for a long time, I know it's not the best thing.

was my best friend. The reflux was awful, i woke up choking on acid a few times but it actually eased off almost completely after I'd given birth. Sadly it's back now but that's because instead of losing my baby weight I've been silly and gained two stone.

Sorry to hijack your post but I just posted about something similar. Did any of you ladies take omeprazole in early pregnancy to keep your reflux symptoms at bay?

Jen McVeigh
No i came off lansoprazole about six months before my last pregnancy and my reflux had gone but pregnancy brought it back. To be honest I'd just stick to gaviscon if you can, it's much safer during pregnancy.

Rebekah Wood
I caved and took omeprazole today 😭 I literally can't stop the pain, nausea and tummy issues. But of course now I'm worried I've made the wrong decision.

Jen McVeigh
One pill won't do any damage so don't worry. Have you got any gaviscon? I took a bottle everywhere with me and drank it like juice. Ginger biscuits can help with the nausea and sucking boiled sweets. Sip cold water throughout the day too.

Rebekah Wood
I do have gaviscon and take it all the time, it does help! A lady commented on my post suggesting ranitidine which would be a safer option, if I'm still suffering, I'll go get some. Thank you so much responding and reassuring me!

You're very welcome. Pregnancy hormones are bad enough without the added reflux concern. I know how you're feeling. Xx

Very true!

My OBGYN said I could continue Prilosec while pregnant. I consulted with my GI nurse yesterday who spoke to a midwife who recommended Pepcid instead.

You could try taking a lesser dose each day or even every other or 3rd day. I dropped from 20mg daily to 10mg daily while pregnant to take the worse away. I have also tried every 3rd day which also along with diet kept it at bay. Have a chat with your GP. Good luck.
